How can you be sure you are hiring the right commercial HVAC contractor for the job?

7 Questions to ask your HVAC Contractor

The Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) recently released a checklist of questions to ask potential HVAC contractors.

“By making this checklist available, we are giving them a resource to help them select a contractor who will perform maintenance based on an industry-recognized standard,” said ACCA president and CEO Paul T. Stalknecht.

1. Is your company licensed to do the work? Only hire contractors that are compliant with your local licensing requirements.
2. How long will the maintenance inspection take? A standard HVAC inspection should take roughly an hour per HVAC system.
3. How is the system operating? Does the contractor listen to your concerns or ask about your issues?
4. Does the maintenance agreement include a safety inspection to make sure the HVAC system is installed according to code? It is important that the equipment is installed according to code to ensure proper safety, energy efficiency and much more.
5. Will you review the Standard 180 based maintenance requirements for your varied HVAC systems with me? Some maintenance tasks may need to be performed between contractor visits.
6. Does the maintenance plan include evaluating the equipment’s performance? The equipment must be checked in order to ensure proper and efficient performance.
7. Will you review the maintenance issues with me? It is important that you understand what issues were found and the proper courses of action to fix those issues.

This simple, 7-question interview will help you determine whether or not the HVAC contractor’s service meets the requirements in the “Standard Practice for Inspection and Maintenance of Commercial Building HVAC Systems” (ANSI/ASHRAE/ACCA Standard 180-2012).
