What You Should Know About the New Data Center Efficiency Standards

Have you heard the most recent data center cooling news?

The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) has published the final version of its data center efficiency standard, recognizing that data centers’ unique characteristics mean that it’s difficult to measure them by the same set of standards as other building types. The standard, named ASHRAE 90.4, was designed to ensure that the efficiency requirements are met in all facilities.

No PUE

The standard does not use PUE, Power Usage Effectiveness, to measure data center efficiency. Rather, it uses an ASHRAE concept created in order to measure the efficiency of a facility’s electrical and mechanical system’s design. The Green Grid Association, the industry group that championed the most widely used data center energy efficiency metric, originally created PUE and insists that it isn’t dead.

ASHRAE Standards Aren’t Law But…

The organization doesn’t enforce compliance with their standards. That being said, local building officials rely on ASHRAE standards in inspections and permitting. They may not be standards, but they can have costly and disruptive repercussions for expensive and complicated data center construction or upgrade projects.

Data Center Efficiency is Imperative

“If governments and companies decide to rely upon increased energy generation, they will not be able to keep up with the demands of big data without significantly contributing to environmental pollution levels. In this future, how would the world look? Would governments step in to regulate Facebook usage, only in daylight hours? Would citizens have the right to only 12 Google searches per day? Should we tax companies on their levels of data usage? This might seem laughable now, but data rationing is a likely outcome if we do not tackle data growth and the underlying demands placed on power consumption.” Roel Castelein, EMEA Marketing Chair for The Green Grid.
