You expect your commercial HVAC systems to perform to the best of their specifications. Now that summer is here, and higher temperatures are going to be the norm, you don’t want your company’s employees suffering during the next heat wave. Having top-flight rooftop HVAC units is well worth the investment. Here is some more information about them.
What the DOE Says
Rooftop units are commonly abbreviated as RTUs. When compared to statistics from other types of commercial HVAC units, RTUs account for about 60% of office buildings nationwide. That’s nothing to sneeze at, but there remains the potential for aggressive expansion. Rooftops units use about 4.3 quads of energy every year, according to the Department of Energy (DOE). Since about 2013 or 2014, there have been tremendous advances in the technology behind the RTUs, allowing for vastly higher performance than ever before. Even if your commercial building is currently equipped with a rooftop unit, it is worth to wait until the end of its current tenure to switch to a newer model. Then again, that time could be coming up sooner than you think.
What ASHRAE Says
Most HVAC equipment can be expected to last 15 years, at least as indicated by ASHRAE, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers. This service lifespan is not guaranteed – along the way; there must be timely preventative maintenance and avoidance of other issues, such as component or refrigerant malfunctions and shortages. Depending on how well your building’s RTU is taken care of, it can exceed expectations and even last up to twenty years. It just takes some constant vigilance. However, in the past few years, standard rooftop HVAC units have proven to be less effective.
What High-Performance Truly Means
And this situation has paved the way for the rise of high-performance rooftop HVAC units. Any units or systems built the meet the standards set forth by the High-Performance Rooftop Unit Specification can cut energy usage by an impressive amount – either 40 or 50%! Your business can save up to a billion dollars in energy costs. Just think of what you could accomplish with all of that extra funding.
