The time has come to review your chiller units. In other words, it is time for some annual chiller maintenance to be completed. Since R-22 is being phased out, you will also have to convert your remaining stores to a different substance instead.
The Fate of Freon
Freon is also known as HCFC-22 and R-22. Surprisingly enough, the ban was enacted a decade ago, in 2010, by the EPA. However, 2020 represents the final countdown until the end of the process. No more freon, or R-22, is allowed to be produced anywhere in the USA. all importation from other countries is now also prohibited. What you have left is still viable, but replacing parts that need freon to run will become trickier, since you cannot recharge using R-22. it might be time for an upgrade or retrofit to address this vexing issue, instead. As R-22 is harmful to the environment, the time has come to get rid of it. Plus, you are obligated to see the process of annual chiller maintenance through at least once a year.
What to Do Now
Newer chiller systems and HVAC units use R-410A instead. Upgrading to a newer system can alleviate the stress associated with switching over your units and making sure that you have what you need. There is no chlorine contained within, which means it is safer for the environment, your building, and your workers. Deciding whether you would like to pursue a replacement or a simple conversion depends on your budget for doing so. You will save money on future repairs by switching to a newer system that has modern components, plus your energy bills will go down by choosing an energy-efficient system instead of your older one that has worn down and has reached the end of its service.
Reasons to Convert Your Chiller Refrigerant
Let’s look at a few reasons why you should consider converting your chiller refrigerant. Planning the changes ahead of time is simpler. It means that you can fit it into the budget now instead of later when you might not be able to; these new systems are more energy-efficient, and you can choose what the new refrigerant is to be. Besides R-410A, you can also pick R-421A, R4-07, or Freon 404A.
