Is Your Building Winterization Completed?

Although you still have a little time left before winter officially starts, you don’t want to wait until the last minute to make sure your building has received proper winter preparation. With temperatures dropping daily, snow could make a surprise appearance at any time. And as any property owner can attest to, property issues seem wait for a snowstorm to become worse.building-wnterization-winter-preparation

Take the following steps to complete your building winterization, and make sure everything is in order before it can become a problem.

Address recurring issues

If you’ve owned your property for a while, you probably know which parts of it are routinely problematic during the winter months. Perhaps the slope of the property makes melting snow and ice pool in some areas, or air seems to escape in one corner of the building. Good building winterization involves addressing these issues before they become serious problems. If you’re a new property owner, contacting contractors who have done previous work on the property can help give you ideas for winter preparation.

Prioritize repairs and maintenance

Sometimes your property requires more work than you can budget at one time. This leads to a list of things to have fixed eventually, which is fine—but make sure the issues that can be worsened by winter weather are taken care of before winter hits. Your building winterization efforts will be set back if there are unresolved issues that can become problematic or agitated during winter.

Go through your checklists

You should have a checklist for all winter preparation that needs to be done to your property. Make sure any building winterization for the following areas are accounted for, if applicable:

  • Decks, patios, balconies
  • Stairs/walkways, roads, sidewalks
  • Landscaping
  • Drain systems, plumbing
  • Roofs
  • Walls, windows, doors
  • Heating and HVAC
  • Electric systems and elevators

Any building winterization that may need to be done to those areas should be written down, not forgotten, and completed before the weather gets bad.
