VRF technology, or variable refrigerant flow, is gaining new attention in the mainstream HVAC industry. Although it is more than ten years old, the past decade has seen it skyrocket in popularity. While there are some limitations to consider, in this blog we will focus on why you should consider VRF technology for your HVAC system.
Energy Efficient
VRF systems use less energy than their non-VRF counterparts. VRF systems will provide the correct amount of cooling for the situation that is needed. It can run less frequently and not at as high a capacity as other systems. These HVAC systems are also capable of taking heat left over from the cooling processes and redistribute it elsewhere in the building.
Quiet, Smooth Operation
Condensing units are noisy. With a VRF system, condensing units are mounted outside. The systems mounted inside, known as indoor air handlers, also operate much more quietly than typical split systems run. In addition to being quieter, they are also smaller, helping to save space in your data center.
Consistently Comfortable
Each area in your building will probably have different environmental conditions. To accommodate this, VRF systems hold conditions at a consistently comfortable level. Proper amounts of refrigerant are distributed for whichever job it is needed for. Thus, every area in your building then has the right amount of heating and cooling. Humidity is kept under control and best of all, no random hot and cold spots.
Modernized Controls
Typically, many commercial HVAC systems are tied into building management software that can be expensive and hard to use. However, businesses that use VRF systems don’t need expensive software. VRF systems come with built-in controls. These controls are provided by most manufacturers and include items such as local remote controllers, central controls, and others. With these controls in place, the VRF systems can do all that building management software can do without need for a technician after initial installation. Technicians such as mechanical contractors might have to do some startup programming, but that is only for certain systems; most systems are ready to go as soon as they are installed.
