Most of the time, no one expects to deal with mold in any well-maintained building. However, that’s when mold is at its deadliest – when it’s hiding in plain sight. If your employees have been complaining about feeling ill, then take a minute to determine what could be causing them to miss time from work because they’re sick. It could be because of mold in your commercial HVAC system.
Check the Coils and Drain Pan
Mold builds up in the condenser coils and drains attached to your HVAC system. Sometimes, it will be easy to spot, and in other cases, you will need an expert HVAC technician to walk you through how to find mold spores and how to catalog the amount of damage these pests have done to your air circulators. Cleaning out the drain pans can help avoid the build-up of standing water, and as such, prevent mold and mildew from being able to invade your building’s HVAC system.
Check the Humidifier
The next step is to look at the humidifier for any signs of mold there. As with the coils and pains, humidifiers and dehumidifiers must be drained at regular intervals. The use of antimicrobial solutions can help prevent bacteria from growing in the water even when you can’t see anything visibly wrong with it.
Have the Filters Replaced
Replacing the air filter is one of the best ways to ensure that your building has better indoor air quality. It also reduces strain on the HVAC system as a whole. All filters should be clean should fit into their housing. Any filters that are loose or dirty need to be switched out as soon as possible. Whether this happens every month or so, make sure to stick to the same schedule, especially if you worry about the presence of mold.
Make Sure Ducts are Maintained
The ductwork associated with your HVAC will quickly fill up with dust, dirt, and other debris. Too much dust can slow down the rate of airflow around the building, which can make tight spaces even hotter and stuffier, which can take its toll on your employees and visitors.
