The Baltimore – Washington DC region is notorious for its harsh winter weather. And this year looks to be no different, with AccuWeather forecasters calling for above-average levels of snow along the East Coast in January and February. Of course, it is almost impossible to accurately predict the weather, but it is always better to be safe than sorry.
Now is the perfect time to start preparing your building for the coming winter weather. Having a plan in place will help protect your building’s mechanical equipment and heating and air conditioning systems, as well as ensure the safety of your employees.
Winter Preparedness Checklist
1. Pre-Storm Planning
Stockpile Supplies: Before severe winter weather hits, it is important to ensure your business has everything it needs to survive. Stock up on: sand bags, water absorbing socks, duct tape, plastic sheeting, wet vacs, floor fans, and anything else you may need.
2. System Backup: Make sure all of your critical business data is securely backed up.
3. Locate Critical Shutoffs: Make sure you know how to shut off your building’s water, electric, and more.
4. Identify Flooding Hazards: Locate any low-lying areas that may be prone to flooding and take action.
5. Remove Debris from around the Building: Remove debris, branches and limbs, and any other debris that could damage your building during a storm.
6. Take down Flags and Signage: Remover all flags and exterior signage prior to storms.
7. Check Equipment: Ensure the operation of your sump pump, lift stations, wet vac, and more.
8. Test Emergency Mechanical Equipment: Make sure all of your building’s emergency mechanical equipment is in working order. Also make sure you have enough fuel to run your emergency generator.
9. Inspects Drains and Gutters: Make sure all drains and gutters are clear of debris. Otherwise, they will not function properly and could lead to flooding.
10. Building and Equipment Shut-Down: For preventive measures right before the storm, shut HVAC equipment, building automation systems, and disable emergency generator systems to prevent automatic start up; turn off electrical switch gear and breakers; turn off the main electrical switchgear and motor control center breakers; and rack out main breakers if possible.
11. Setup Pre-Arranged Maintenance Agreements: Contact your local water damage restoration company, electrical contractor, and HVAC contractor to arrange post-storm maintenance and repairs.
